PODCASTING

The term "podcasting" has burst into the popular technology world as a very cool way of being entertained and delivering audio and video content. Despite this surge in interest - creating and maintaining a podcast can be a difficult, time consuming and very misunderstood process.

Here's a quick explanation about podcasting, how it works, and how eIO.net's browser tools can help unleash the power of this technology while it simplifies the effort required to create and update podcast feeds.

What Podcasting is (in simple terms):
Podcasting allows people to automate the process of downloading their favorite audio or video contact from the web. This includes files (example: weekly radio and tv shows) that without podcasting, would require manual search and downloading.

Podcasting automates this downloading process and makes it so easy - it's a pleasure to get your new updated shows and media files. In podcasting terminology the file that tells you what new shows are available is called the "feed" (aka: RSS feed). Most web sites offering this service display with the following icon or similar:

A podcast feed is actually a text file (also known as an "XML" file) that contains a list of audio or video files and the information
about the clips (aka: Meta information). As part of the podcast specification the publish date of the clips is included. Whenever you request or schedule and update of your podcast feed, your podcast capable media player (i.e.: iTunes, FireFox, etc.) compares the media clip information from the previous update and only downloads the "new stuff".

What Podcasting is NOT
Simply putting a link on a web page for an mp3 or other file is not podcasting. It's easy - but not the real deal. There is no automated feed information so weekly shows will still need to be manually downloaded and sorted through to become updated.
